In 1998 a group of parents started a Steiner-inspired toddler group in the front room of one of the parents houses. From this emerged a kindergarten, which formally opened a couple of mornings a week in January 2003 in St Augustines Church Hall in the north of the City. A charitable company was established, called the Norfolk Initiative Steiner School.

At the same time that the kindergarten opened, a group of parents set about the considerable task of developing a Steiner school for children from age 7 upwards.  Larger premises were found in the form of a hall and rooms at Bowthorpe Road Methodist church Hall in September 2004 and in September 2005, the lower school for pupils age 7 opened. The first class had just 3 pupils in it (pictured above), two of whom graduated as 19 year olds from the school in 2017.

In September 2008, after a summer of redecorating, the School re-opened in its current Victorian premises set in three acres on Hospital Lane.
